Intellectual traits

  1. Intellectual Integrity
    1. To respect oneself as well as your peers whether face to face or over the World Wide Web. This means respect through word choice and turn of phrase so that proper consideration is taken to make your point but in a respectful manner. This ensures that though you both may not reach a consensus you have a understanding as to why they feel the way that they do. The main goal is to make connections, as adults the beginning of the future is when we can respect each other’s opinion. I have seen a post of feminist rallies in Seattle which basically demanded equality. Other females with opposing opinions commented and had respectful debates to try to gain a better understanding. Though they agreed to disagree this is a very emotionally driven subject that remained respectful which I thought was amazing.
  2. Intellectual Independence
This means know yourself inside out to the point you’ll accept advice from the outside, but it’ll never change you. Independence is as we are as individuals void of any influences that may cause one to doubt their stand point. Though it does come with its own set of set backs its worth fighting for your unique thoughts and feelings. Many hopped on the band wagon when the wave against sexual harassment in Hollywood gained traction. The women that got backlash in the early stages of the movement with their continuous posts through all the nasty comments both on Social Media and in real life I applaud for their courage.
  1. Intellectual Perseverance
This is wearing the storms per say to stick by your beliefs and values. It is not easy to have the mentality to be able to stand against the constant battering of the naysayers who challenge what you believe in. The tide is strong with a combination of conviction and courage coupled with support a person who is persevering pushes through. Post-Partum depression affects many mothers who continuously turn to online support groups that provide a them with a community that can support them through consistent encouragement and hope.
  1. Intellectual Empathy
Taking into consideration the “why” behind the reasoning of the opposition. Most people argue or debate without ever stopping for a second to see behind their own emotion to try and understand why their sparring partner has such passion on their side. Emotions run deep in our very beings, but it can also breed stubbornness and blindness to the emotions of others. I had a classmate that suffered from depression for some reason one of the “tough” guys commented not with a slick comment but questions “What is depression? Is it that bad?”. Removing stigmas around taboos have been a major plus of social media I thought it was amazing that rather than making light of it he wanted to learn more as not to be insensitive.

Intellectual Humility
Just admitting shortcomings when unsure of a concrete answer. Rather than trying to make it seem as if you know it ALL! It’s just being self-aware so that you can seek out the answers from elsewhere so that you can learn. A lot of resources are now made available via the World Wide Web and a lot of the social sites if posted as a question you’ll get responses as soon as possible. Utilizing YouTube is my best example of a humbling experience on social media as any.

  1. Intellectual Courage
The companion to Intellectual Perseverance and this is a person prepared to make sacrifices for their beliefs and values. Whether it be with the society supporting you or against you it’s the independence imbedded in ones being that strengthens their resolve in persevering so as to never compromise their beliefs. This includes having the courage to make changes in oneself if deep down you know that those learned beliefs are wrong. There is a stigma surrounds interracial dating in certain places and a simple post claiming someone of another race as your significant other signifies your love. Also means that they’re well prepared for the backlash of opposition but also they were able to unlearn their taught beliefs.

  1. Confidence in Reason
Evidence is the basis of reasoning when solving a problem. Rather than personal opinion this is the utilization of evidence provided to support a solution. Also, rather than empathizing it is taking the “viewpoints” from all sides so that far observations are made.  Emotions, faith and personal opinions carry no weight in this problem-solving category as outlined in the summary. In other words, if it’s not backed by a study or statistics it cannot be taken into consideration. Using social media as a whole to link with other researchers to find attorneys to help struggling families pro-bono facing deportation is use of social media to find individuals who use this method to solve problems.
  1. Fairmindedeness
A combination of being empathic and fair as to ensure to put others feelings before your own. This is basically playing mediator which is taking everyone’s emotions and opinions into consideration so a sound judgement can be made. Or no judgement at all for that matter it can just be simple understanding. This can be achieved only if you think before putting in your two cents. POTUS twitter posts are a great example rather than posting some profanity filled retweet take a breather and think about. Is it worth the aggravation? If the answer is not, then keep scrolling IF NOT then be respectful.

  1. The purpose of the assignment is was to gain a better understanding so that when we decide to branch out we take these values into consideration first.
  2. Is it worth being virtuous among ignorant commentators and content makers on social media platforms?
