| No matter the religion or geographical location the meaning of the Golden Rule revolves around fair treatment and compassion |
Just because other people do it doesn’t make it right…
The Copyright laws that we currently have aren’t as
effective as they should because it doesn’t provide the necessary weight to
protect the copyright owner. For those aware of the laws, it is solely on the
copyright holder to enforce it since it seems unimportant to those who have not
seen the work and effort behind that image. Being that it is on the world wide
web most believe that these laws somehow are voided because its readily available
with a click of a mouse. This is the main reason why it is extremely unfair
because the underdogs must fight for their right to their content from those of
popular standpoints. Therefore, as users of the internet we must think about
the ethics behind utilizing the images that are available. Which is why we each
have to make the choice that is ethical as to whether we should use it or not.
Our laws covering copyrights may be complex, but it is simple to make the choice
as to whether it should be used or not if you follow your gut.
Making Changes to a
Copyrighted Image Doesn't Make it Yours...
Images that you had no hand in creating, capturing or
curating are not yours also small alterations to the said image means you are
still liable. Ownership of the copyright is the deciding factor as to whether
you can use the image or text in another way or incorporated in a new piece. Any
type of alterations to said image whether substantial or minor does not make it
any less of the copyright owners property. With all our social media outlets that
have editing software many people mistaken the availability of images that have
a new filter suddenly makes it theirs.
Second level of reading
As content creators and users of images on the WWW should use
it with the owner in mind because that is there hard work that should be respected.
We see the struggle of less popular sources being taken advantage of by popular
giants so as users we should take into consideration that ethically we should hold
ourselves at a higher standard to protect their rights also. In other words, making
a conscious effort to be informed about copyright laws and tailoring our search
engines to ensure that images shown are those specifically available to be used
in any capacity. The purpose of this assignment is to gain awareness so that as
creators we are utilizing resources as intended by the sources to avoid
infringing on the copyright holder’s rights! The key question at the heart of
the assignment is “With this knowledge are we going to become activists to
change the name of the game so that there is fair treatment across the board?”.

Your post has precision when you said "Any type of alterations to said image whether substantial or minor does not make it any less of the copyright owners property." That is exactly true, the copyright holder has all rights to whereever his or her photo is used even when altered in the slightest ways.
ReplyDeleteI am questioning the Clarity of your statement " This is the main reason why it is extremely unfair because the underdogs must fight for their right to their content from those of popular standpoints". Are you referring to a regular person who has copyright of an image, and that image is being used by corporations or big Companies? Or would it be the same outcome if a regular person used an image they had no copyright to? Are you trying to say that the laws are difficult to stick either way?
